  • 9 Phrases Allies Can Say When Called Out Instead of Getting Defensive — If, like me, you struggle to respond when someone points out something you said or did that didn’t come across well, this article has you covered!  Appeared in Everyday Feminism, May 2017.
  • Yes You Can Measure White Privilege — full of charts and statistics, this short article demonstrates the measurable harm of racism in education, employment, income and spending.  Appeared in The Root, April 2017.
  • 6 Ways Well-Intentioned People Whitesplain Racism — from Everyday Feminism, February 2016, this piece breaks down 6 ways well-intentioned (White) people can make conflict and bigotry worse.
  • 10 Counterproductive Behaviors of Well-Intended People — a must-read for Good White People, and anyone doing ally work.  An easy, insightful 4 1/2-pages from Cody Charles that originally appeared online in The Body is Not An Apology in September 2015.  (If you like this, also read Maura Cullen’s book 35 Dumb Things Well-Intended People Say).
  • You’re More Biased Than You Think — appearing in Fast Company in October 2014, this is one of the shortest (3 pages), clearest pieces on unconscious bias out there that explains what it is, how it affects us, and what to do about it!
  • How (Un)ethical Are You? — from the December 2003 issue of Harvard Business Review, an excellent summary of the 6 costs of unconscious bias, 3 types of unconscious bias, and three ways managers can make a positive difference.
  • Racism without Racists — from CNN in November 2014 following the Ferguson decision, one of the best explanations of how racism manifests today and why it persists: Whites and people of color speak a difference language, and racism is systemic, impersonal and often unconscious. Learn the three phrases Whites use that keep us stuck!
  • The Business Case for Racial Equity — from the Altarum Institute in October 2013, one of the most concise, complete, statistic-rich reports on what we lose due to racial disparities, and what we stand to gain from correcting them.  Covers workforce productivity, government, economic growth, housing, education, healthcare and crime in 10 pages.
  • Why Acknowledging That Racism Exists Isn’t the Same as Being Anti-Racist — while I’m not a fan of the word “anti-racist” (doesn’t tell us what to move towards and reinforces what we want to move away from) this is a must read for Good White People who want to understand the different between prejudice and racism, the 3 types of racism and what we can do about it.
  • 11 Ways White America Avoids Taking Responsibility for its Racism — Written by a White man in 2015, this is the best piece I’ve read that summarizes the two major misconceptions White people have about racism, unpacks the nature of White fragility around conversations about race, and offers two simple guidelines for how to hear feedback from people of color — in only 3 1/2 pages.  A must read for Good White People!
  • The Distress of the Privileged — A fantastic 5-page read from 2015 about the true nature of privilege and supremacy, and how we need to have compassion for the privileged and win them over, but not equate their distress with the distressed of the less privileged who lack material justice and even fear for their lives. The solution is “firmness together with understanding.”
  • The Culture of Power by Paul Kivel in 2000 — one of the clearest, most accessible, concise articles I’ve seen on what power is, how we experience being both insiders and outsiders, why it’s important to address power inequities, and how to assess your organization’s culture of power.
  • I, Racist — From John Metta in July 2015 this concise, easy read elegantly and clearly highlights key obstacles in Whites and Blacks talking about race: (1) Whites think, act and are treated as “I”, while people of color are treated, and think as “we”, (2) “the entire discussion of race in America centers around the protection of White feelings”, and (3) Whites “arguing about personal non-racism is missing the point” — that to benefit from racism is to be complicit.
  • A Gardener’s Tale by Dr. Camara Jones — written in 2000 by a public health powerhouse, one of the best descriptions of personal, institutional and internalized racism, and one of the clearest explanations of the effects of racism over time using an eye-opening gardening analogy.  All in 4 pages!
  • White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh — published in 1989, this simple, 3 1/2-page, non-accusatory piece has changed many lives with its clear definition of White Privilege and still opens eyes today.
